About Magic Wand 2
This contemporary fibre art wall hanging is by Chung-Im Kim.The eclectic, superbly handcrafted artwork of this Canadian artist has garnered her international recognition and acclaim. Inspired by her own rich heritage and intricate patterns found in nature, Kim uses industrial felt to create her wall hangings. This vertical piece in a rich golden yellow colour is made from small pieces of industrial felt sewn together and pulled taut to create a raised pattern and tension in the design. Kim works intuitively, allowing each module to help guide the next, building the shape as she goes. One of a series.
“I was once deeply inspired by the large salvaged ceramic pots in an exhibition of artifacts from an ancient shipwreck. The long period under the sea transformed the pots into something else by allowing small sea creatures to grow over the surface. The pots became timeless beings, a strange new organism. I witnessed a magnificent transformation, whereby the potter’s intention and their original function were diminished and a new organic process had taken over, bringing its own unexpected magic.” Chung-Im Kim
Chung-Im Kim has received accolades and exhibitions for her work from prestigious institutions such as the Boston Museum of Art, the invitational Bojagi Exhibition at the Suwon Park Museum in Korea, the Museum Nagele in the Netherlands, and the Belgian Triennial Contemporary Textile Arts Exposition. Kim's exquisite design and execution have been honoured with top prizes and awards in many international art competitions. One of her works was selected as a gift from Canada to the president of China. She received her MFA from Seoul Women's University in 1984 and has taught at OCAD University in Toronto since 2006.
