About Corpheum V
This contemporary outdoor sculpture was forged from steel by a Quebec artist. An elegantly curved column of corten steel appears to almost float in mid-air in this arresting outdoor sculpture by Claude Millette.
The Quebec artist whose career spans four decades is known for his imaginative abstract work that plays with the viewer’s perception of balance and imbalance. The steel structure has a rust-colored patina and sits on top of three stacked metal cubes—each one placed at angles to one another. One of a series.
“The opposition between solid and flexible takes on its full meaning from the fact that the beams I make for my work, unlike the framework of buildings, are usually curved and appear to grow. It’s like what happens in dance, energy comes from tensions or polarities.” Claude Millette
Claude Millette was born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec and studied at the École de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and apprenticed with sculptors Robert Poulin and Jordi Bonet. Millette's works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He has received commissions for public artworks in Quebec, Russia, France, Costa Rica and Mexico. His works have been acquired by several museums (Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Quebec City), and stands in numerous municipal and private collections.
