About Rencontre

Sculptor Claude Millette's distinctive contemporary sculptures grace many public spaces in Canada. This large abstract outdoor piece, Recontre (French for ‘encounter’) is forged from stainless steel and features two powerful forms—a graceful arch and a canoe-like shape, positioned side by side as if they were meeting. The Quebec artist’s imaginative work often challenges the viewer’s perception of balance and imbalance.

“The opposition between solid and flexible takes on its full meaning from the fact that the beams I make for my works, unlike the framework of buildings, are usually curved and growing in shape. Like what happens in dance, energy comes from tensions or polarities.” Claude Millette

Claude Millette was born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. He studied at the École de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and apprenticed with revered sculptors Robert Poulin and Jordi Bonet. Millette's works have been commissioned for many public art projects and have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Mexico.
