About Prairie Field
She was known to never be without her paint and paint brushes. Dorothy Knowles is considered one of Canada’s most respected landscape painters. This beautiful watercolour depicts a view she knew very well having grown up on a farm surrounded by golden fields--the prairie. It is rendered in a classic palette—sky blue, soft greens and yellow contrasting with browns, deep blue and black. In an interview she was once asked what five factors were vital for a good life. This was her response.“I guess my five have been painting, painting, painting, painting, and painting.” Dorothy Knowles
Born in Saskatchewan in 1927, Knowles studied art at the University of Saskatchewan, the Goldsmith School of Art in London and the Banff Centre. She was one of a number of professional artists who attended the famous Emma Lake Workshops. She is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Knowles became a member of the Order of Canada in 2004. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections in Canada. Knowles died in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2023 at the age of 96.
