An iconic phrase—‘I DO’—traditionally used in marriage vow ceremonies becomes the focal point for this contemporary painting by Graham Gillmore.The Canadian artist uses everyday language, phrases and lyrics to create visually arresting and engaging colourful compositions. In this piece, a ‘wash’ of white and yellow appears against a fresh green backdrop. The words, ‘I DO’— in a bold modern font appears in white.

Born in Vancouver, Graham Gillmore studied at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions including the MOMA, NY, the Tate Modern, London and Galería Fucares, Madrid. His artwork is held in permanent collections such as Colección Jumex, Mexico, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Belgium, Gian Enzo Sperone collection, Italy, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, and the Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada. He lives and works in New York City and Winlaw, BC.
