About Reverie
This large figurative contemporary metal sculpture is designed for the outdoors. As far back as he can remember Jason Kimes was always making some form of art. The Mississippi born sculptor has acquired a reputation for superb craftsmanship, attention to fine detail and unique designs.
Kimes was first introduced to welding and creating large outdoor metal sculptures in University. A background in casting and working as a mold maker using iron, bronze and aluminum prepared him for the style he uses today to create such eclectic figurative pieces. As he didn’t have the facilities to create large molds, he experimented with welding smaller metal pieces together and in the process developed his signature style. In this piece, a tall (almost 6 feet in height) figure is seated, casually posed (leaning back on his arms, legs dangling) on a large corten steel box-like base. The figure is meticulously constructed of small round (coin-shaped) pieces of highly polished stainless steel welded together and applied in rows to a corten steel frame. The shiny ‘skin’ of the figure reflects light and the surrounding scenery. The heavily patinated rust-colour of the steel box contrasts beautifully with the silver metal.
“I use the human form either explicitly or implied through negative space. As a three dimensional shape every human is familiar with, the figure creates an immediate connection with any viewer. My hope is the viewer is able to see themselves or others in each piece and then engage with the potential question of emotion provoked by the sculpture.” Jason Kimes
“As I walked tightly around the sculpture, its reflective skin appeared to take on every color around it, throwing the surrounding trees, buildings, and sky back to me. As I gave the artwork some distance, light from the sun engulfed it. With the sculpture’s mirroring quality diminished, it appeared as if it were made of light itself. This source of awe, a man ablaze between the green grass and the clear sky, could only happen in open air.” TK Smith, Curator, Mississippi Museum of Art
Jason Kimes completed a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Southern Mississippi and an MFA in Sculpture from Southern Illinois University in 2005. Since then, he has completed multiple commissions and taken part in exhibitions across the US. His work is held in numerous private and public collections and graces many outdoor venues.
