About Cienfuegos

Much beloved and renowned Saskatchewan born Joe Fafard created simply stunning sculptures that celebrated the beauty of farm animals—cows, bulls and horses. All of his work including his human subjects were exquisitely detailed and imbued with character and humour. Hand forged in bronze and patinated, this noble bull sits, head turned towards the viewer—his coat a rich chestnut brown and black.. ‘Cienfuegos’ means ‘one hundred fires’ in Spanish. This sculpture is inscribed with the artist’s signature.

“I want to give Canadians a sense of the country, a sense of what we have here in terms of the beautiful creatures.” Joe Fafard

Fafard was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1981 and received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Regina, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The National Gallery of Canada with the Mackenzie Art Gallery in Regina mounted a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work that toured to six venues between 2007 and 2009. Fafard's artworks are held in major museum collections including the National Gallery of Canada.
