About Black Woven Detail Vessel - Tall

This exquisitely detailed basalt clay vessel was created by Loren Kaplan. The Toronto-based ceramicist is known for her fine work inspired by the ancient tradition of vessel-making. This piece in flat black has a pleasing tall form with a rounded base. A woven basket weave detail adds to its rich texture. One of a series.
“I make vessels because containers are about potential…defined spaces of emptiness that can be filled with something…or nothing.” Loren Kaplan

Born in South Africa, Kaplan earned a BFA from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and studied at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics. In 1995 she established a studio and began a teaching career with the Visual Arts and Crafts Academy in Johannesburg. She moved with her family to Canada in 2013. Kaplan has exhibited regularly in South Africa and Toronto and received numerous awards. Her work is recognized internationally and is held in many private collections and in the South African Constitutional Court Art Collection.
