This contemporary abstract mixed media piece consists of oil on wood and a fabric collage in colourful geometric shapes.

For decades, Lucy Maki has explored a distinctive visual language that has often masterfully incorporated mixed media, geometric shapes and architectural elements. The New Mexico artist has been influenced by modernist abstraction, cubism and surrealism. Her most recent work continues to investigate the possibilities of the shaped painting—canvas stretched over wood panels; a concept popular in the 1960s. In this dynamic piece, several wood panels appear as rectangular frames—layered and defined by colour and expressive markings.
The palette of this painting is a harmonious mix of greens—dark to pale and lime, punctuated by black and white. A band of white, yellow-orange and red runs the width of the painting in the middle. Patterned fabric adds texture and intriguing detail. The feeling of ‘’motion’ is palpable.

“The play of boundaries between polarities such as painting/sculpture, virtual/actual, flat/dimensional, representation/abstraction, ornamental/minimal, spontaneous/controlled, become integrated in a singular gestalt unique to each piece.” Lucy Maki

“Geometry and architectural mechanisms in her paintings reference the certainty offered by built environments. “ Lyndsay Knecht, Writer, producer

Lucy Maki received her MA and MFA from the University of New Mexico, finishing in 1982. Maki’s artwork has been exhibited internationally--in the US, Mexico and Canada. It can be found in collections at the Albuquerque Museum and the Museum of New Mexico.
