About Floating Frames
This contemporary abstract acrylic painting consists of green geometric shapes. An intuitive artist, Lucy Maki’s unique artwork is often both a painting and a sculptural piece. With Floating Frames, the New Mexico artist says she is “playing with illusion as two pop-out wood ‘frames’ float across illusory painted white frames.” Rendered in a green palette ranging from deep forest green to soft green and chartreuse, this piece is composed of acrylic media, wood, and canvas over a shaped panel. The concept of shaped paintings became wildly popular in the 1960s. For decades, Maki has explored a distinctive visual language that incorporates mixed media, geometric shapes and architectural elements.
“By noticing, feeling the interactions between shape, color, line, brushstroke, texture, an ordered sequence mysteriously emerges that makes the painting’s structure cohere.” Lucy Maki
“Lucy Maki’s intuitive process calls back to New Mexico’s Transcendental Painting Group, and yields shaped paintings in a style of her own.” Lyndsay Knecht, Writer, producer
Lucy Maki received her MA and MFA from the University of New Mexico, finishing in 1982. Maki’s artwork has been exhibited internationally--in the US, Mexico and Canada. It can be found in collections at the Albuquerque Museum and the Museum of New Mexico.
