About Shades of Blue
This contemporary abstract painting consists of geometric shapes in shades of blue. For decades, the engaging work of Lucy Maki has attracted both critics and collectors internationally. Influenced by modernist abstraction, cubism and surrealism, the New Mexico artist has explored a distinctive visual language that often incorporates mixed media, geometric shapes and architectural elements. In this dynamic composition, layered squares and rectangles are rendered in various shades of blue—from sky blue to turquoise and deep blue. Patterns and calligraphic markings in black on white add visual interest and energy to the work.
“The paintings themselves exist on the line between image and object, illusive and actual. They arise out of the process of painting and the concrete use of color, line, texture, form, and shape.” Lucy Maki
“It’s Maki’s slant, playful gestures and textures that transcend our associations with anything certain.” Lyndsay Knecht, Writer, producer
Lucy Maki received her MA and MFA from the University of New Mexico, finishing in 1982. Maki’s artwork has been exhibited internationally--in the US, Mexico and Canada. It can be found in collections at the Albuquerque Museum and the Museum of New Mexico.
