About Shifting Latitude

This imposing abstract composition by Lucy Maki is both a painting and a sculptural object. The New Mexico artist has been painting for more than 20 years and has been influenced by early modernist abstraction, cubism, and even surrealism. As with this striking piece, she works in mixed media using both organic and geometric forms, flat surfaces and three-dimensions. Her colour palette is dramatic—orange, red and black against a white backdrop.

“The most important role of art is to provide access to a realm of knowing beyond ordinary consciousness.” Lucy Maki

She received her MA and MFA from the University of New Mexico, finishing in 1982. Maki’s artwork has been exhibited in the US, Mexico and Canada. It can be found in collections at the Albuquerque Museum and the Museum of New Mexico.
