Biography
With roots in classical Greek art, architecture and mythology, Malcolm Rains explores balance and harmony and even an austerity in his elegant paintings. Inspired by the Baroque painter Juan Sanchez-Cotan, Rains uses intense light and shadow, precise imagery and pristine surfaces. His artwork – whether figurative or abstract -- seeks a mystical or conceptual connection with the viewer. A critical review of his work by Donald Brackett appeared in Critics at Large (2016).
Born in England, Malcolm Rains emigrated to Canada in 1955. After studies in architecture at the University of Toronto and University of Detroit, he completed a degree at the Ontario College of Art.
Rains has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and The Power Plant (Toronto). His work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Global Affairs Canada.
