About Malcolm Rains

Malcolm Rains

Born in England, Malcolm Rains emigrated to Canada in 1955. After studies in architecture at the University of Toronto and University of Detroit, he completed a degree at the Ontario College of Art. With roots in classical Greek art, architecture and mythology, Rains explores balance and harmony and even an austerity revealing the influence of Baroque painter Juan Sanchez-Cotan. Using tenebrism or intense light and shadow, precise imagery and pristine surfaces, Rains’ work – whether figurative or abstract -- seeks a mystical or conceptual connection with the viewer.

Rains has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Winnipeg Art Gallery and The Power Plant (Toronto). His work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Global Affairs Canada.
