Three bold nature inspired images pop against a velvety black background in this minimalist painting by Pat Service. The Canadian artist’s abstract series is called, ‘The Black Velvet Paintings.’ Inspired in form and colour by the landscape and the natural world, turquoise, white and rich brown contrast beautifully with the black backdrop.
"You know those treasures we can still find in second-hand stores, the paintings painted on real velvet? They gave me the idea of starting with a black canvas, which is the opposite of how I have traditionally worked.” Pat Service
Service acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong and in several museum collections around the world.
