About Shawinigan Roadside, watercolour
This watercolour landscape by Pat Service captures a countryside view from the road in summer.Highly regarded as one of Canada’s finest landscape artists, Pat Service’s earliest works reveal her love of impressionism. Finely detailed brushwork and a pastel-coloured palette are displayed in this peaceful painting of the countryside.
Colours in soft blues, greens, orange, yellow and green are further softened by Service’s practice of thinning paint, rendering it almost translucent in appearance. Shawinigan is a village on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. This is one of two paintings called Shawnigan Roadside—the other is an acrylic painting.
“Poetic observations from my life are the starting points for my paintings. From them, I hope to create pictures that are fresh, thoughtful, and intriguing.” Pat Service
“The look of a place is a starting point in her attempt to get a picture that is more accurately evocative of the sense or “feeling” of place. In this, she shares a close affinity with the work of Canadian artist David Milne (1882- 1953).”
