About Arctic Princess

Rob Lorenson has been creating masterful large abstract sculptures for public and private venues for more than thirty years. The American sculptor’s contemporary work plays with a form that often appears familiar—almost figurative at times and always suggests movement.
Arctic Princess is one of a series of elegant sculptures-- three long curved beams form a tripod that supports two halves of a circle. The sculpture is forged from aluminum; the seams are masked by layers of pure white glossy paint (‘Arctic’ white). Lorenson favours ‘removing the hand of the maker’ so there is no visible evidence of how his art is made.

“What is distilled here is pure expression of form and shape without owing to any one or two things. There is subtlety of line and surface. The way that the surfaces create shapes—both positive and negative is important to me.” Rob Lorenson

Rob Lorenson was born in Iowa in 1969. He had an early interest in art and sculpture and attended The University of Northern Iowa on an arts scholarship. Graduate school followed at the Northern University of Illinois where he attained an MFA in sculpture. Lorenson has taught art history and sculpture at several US universities, finally landing at Bridgewater University in Massachusetts where he still teaches today. He has always continued his own art practice, has been represented by a number of American galleries and has placed works in more than 300 private and public settings.
