About Red Rhythm #22
This large scale abstract metal sculpture in red painted metal is by Rob Lorenson. The bold contemporary design and superb craftsmanship of Rob Lorenson’s sculptural work has earned him many prestigious public commissions.
The American sculptor often plays with a form that appears familiar—almost figurative at times and always suggests movement. “The forms have boldness and exactness that are inspired by the martial arts where grace and precision are practiced until they are effortless.”.
This sculpture is forged from aluminum—three elegantly curved beams intersecting one another support two half circles. The welded seams are masked by layers of glossy red paint. Lorenson favours ‘removing the hand of the maker’ so there is no visible evidence of how his art is made.
The sculpture stands on a round metal disk painted black which can be anchored to a solid surface such as concrete or stone.
“What is distilled here is pure expression of form and shape without owing to any one or two things. There is subtlety of line and surface. The way that the surfaces create shapes—both positive and negative is important to me.” Rob Lorenson
Rob Lorenson was born in Iowa in 1969. He had an early interest in art and sculpture and attended The University of Northern Iowa on an arts scholarship. Graduate school followed at the Northern University of Illinois where he attained an MFA in sculpture. Lorenson has taught art history and sculpture at several US universities, finally landing at Bridgewater University in Massachusetts where he still teaches today. He has always continued his own art practice, has been represented by a number of American galleries and has placed works in more than 300 private and public settings.
