About Particles 1/20

A bird’s eye view of billowing clouds floats across this mesmerizing tondo created by Ryan Van Der Hout. The Toronto artist owned a telescope as a child and spent many hours fascinated by the sky. This black and white pigment print is perforated with a bright sunny yellow geometric pattern. The reflected light shines through the layers of plexiglass and mirrors behind the print. Another layer of coloured plexiglass on the back creates a yellow halo on the wall around the piece. Number one in an edition of twenty.

“Conceiving of the photograph as something sculptural, Van Der Hout seeks to create photography that escapes the frame and challenges our notion of what a photograph can and cannot be.” Ryanvanderhout.com

He is a graduate of Ryerson's photography program. Van Der Hout’s photo-based work has been exhibited in the U.K., New York and in Canada.
