Biography

Cheryl Wilson-Smith is a Canadian glass artist based in Northern Ontario, where she grew up in the heart of the boreal forest. Largely self-taught, she has worked in  primarily in kiln-formed glass for over 20 years, using various types of glass and a meticulous layering process to explore themes of transformation, fragility, and time. Her sculptures evoke geological and emotional erosion—meditations on memory, impermanence, and the natural world.

Wilson-Smith has participated in prestigious residencies including North Lands Creative (Scotland), Sheridan College  Artist in Residence, and the Corning Museum of Glass residency. She has exhibited across Canada, the US, and the Europe, with notable shows including 21 Pillows at The Studios of Key West, and Art Toronto. A recent highlight includes a three-metre-long private commission for a designer in England.

She is the recipient of the RBC Award for Glass, a prestigious honour recognizing the best emerging voices in Canadian glass, has been published in the Corning Museum of Glass’ publication New Glass review. She was selected for Tg: Transitions in Kiln-Glass, Bullseye Glass Co.’s international juried exhibition of outstanding kiln-glass art and design. and chosen by curator Susie Silbert for Community Picks at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, where Silbert praised her ability to “capture the texture of time” through layered materials.

Wilson-Smith’s work is held in public and private collections worldwide, including the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. She is an active juror and speaker, contributing to ongoing conversations around sustainability, material, and the evolving role of glass in contemporary art.
