About Hat on the Wall

A moment in time is captured in intimate detail in this realistic painting by Dmitry Yuzefovich. Known for his nostalgic trompe l’oeil work, this composition of an entryway features a lovingly worn straw hat in the center surrounded by a flurry of handwritten notes pinned to the wall, an umbrella sitting on the shelf above it all. Yuzefovich often uses the dilapidated wall—paint, old wallpaper peeling to help convey a sense of time. The colour palette is warm and soft—browns, yellows, blues, pink, white and a pop of red.

“My work is all about representation of memory. I frequently represent environments in which I lived in the past or attempt to catch the memory of living in them.” Dmitry Yuzefovich

He obtained a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel in 2000 and an MFA in 2005. He moved to Canada with his family in 2015 and lives in Nova Scotia. Yuzefovich has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. His paintings have been collected in Israel, Canada, the US, England and Europe.
