About August Still Life

Inspired by the classic still life paintings of famous French artists like Matisse and Manet, Pat Service chose to create her own unique version in the 1990s. This charming painting of a cloth-draped table set with a colourful floral bouquet and accented with various fruits is reminiscent of a more traditional style. Service’s version becomes contemporary given the bold black and white check pattern of the tablecloth and the fresh palette of blue, orange, pink, yellow, green and red.

“My practice was to bring ornaments and fruits and odds and ends of things to the studio, lay them out on a table and try to capture the romance of their presence.”
