Susan Collett

Susan Collett is a graduate from the Cleveland Institute of Art, Ohio U.S.A. earning a BFA degree in Printmaking with a Minor in Ceramics. Since 1993 she has run a full-time studio art practice in downtown Toronto. Public and private gallery exhibitions and commission work sustains her.

Large-scale clay sculpture and printmaking has become the focus of her work. The clay works are hand-built of earthenware paper clay, glazed and multi-fired to achieve a complex patina of surfaces. The monoprints are printed from plates made of stitched industrial grade roofing copper incorporating delicate embossed relief.

Her work has been included in the collection of the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum, India (Glimmer permanent collection 2024) The Gyeonggi Museum, Korea (Thicket permanent collection 2024), The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Canada House, Trafalgar Square, UK. As well, Aimia, Toronto & Montreal, The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art (Regis permanent collection 2024) and The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery (Roseladen permanent collection 2024).

Exhibitions include The Museum of Ceramic Art, NYC (virtual museum) in 2024, The Korean Biennale in 2024, the International Ceramic Art Fair at the Gardiner Museum in 2023, The Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, 2023, the Paper Clay Illuminated USA touring, 2020-21, curated by Peter Held, The Toronto International Art Fair 2013-2016 with Sandra Ainsley Gallery, accepted to the Korean Biennale 2015 & Taiwan Biennale 2012, International Triennial of Silicate Arts, Kecskemet, Hungary 2011, Sevres Porcelain Museum, Paris, 2010, and an honourable mention at the CEBIKO International Ceramics Biennale in Korea 2009. She has exhibited at SOFA Chicago & New York, Palm Beach and the Toronto International Art Fair.

In 2019 an invitation to present at the Oldenburg Ceramic Fair saw her sculpture in Germany with a feature exhibition that as well travelled to the Keramion Museum, Frechen, Germany. In 2009, Collett was invited by the ceramic Association of Israel to conduct a Master workshop near the Dead Sea and various invitations to give presentations on her work at The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, Hangzhou Art & Design Academy, China and Concordia University in Montreal and California State University, Long Beach among others.

Her work has appeared in the Museum of Ceramic Art, a virtual museum in NYC (2024), Ceramic Review, Ceramic Art & Perception, Ceramics Technical, Canadian Art and various catalogues and publications.

Collections include: Arizona State University Museums, The Claridge Collection, Montreal, The Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, Canada House, UK, The Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal, Sevres Porcelain Museum, Paris, Ernst & Young, Toronto, The Four Seasons Hotel, Toronto, Musee des Beaux Arts, Montreal, the Keramik Kunst Museum in Germany, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Sevres Porcelain Museum in Paris, The Kasturbhai Lalbhai Museum in India, the Canadian Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, DC. and The Canadiana Collection of the Official Residences of Ottawa, Rideau Hall where the sculpture Filigree was placed in the private office of the Governor General of Canada.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada purchased the sculpture AXIS ll for the permanent collection in London, where Collett attended the official opening by The Queen & Prince Phillip of newly renovated Canada House February 2015.

She received her letters from the IAC, International Academy of Ceramics in 2007 and her RCA, Royal Canadian Academy of Ceramics in 2008. She has been a member of Open Studio printmaking studio for over 30 years.
